Fake Rebate Scams on the Rise:
If you receive a call from someone claiming to be from the “Department of Finance” or the “Office of State Revenue,” informing you that you’re entitled to a sum of money but you’re required to pay a small fee first, just hang up.
The ACCC has seen a dramatic increase in reports about rebate scams, so we’re passing on this information so that you can keep your guard up.
The scammers will always have a “good” reason as to why you’re owed the money; tax refunds, bank fee rebates, investment returns, once-off payments or even bonuses are amongst the many stories that you’ll hear to get you to part with your cash.
You’ll be asked to provide personal information and credit card or bank details to perform the “necessary” wire transfer, that will then allow for your money to be transferred. We strongly suggest that if ever you’re asked to make bank transfer payments over the phone, particularly following an unexpected call, that you hang up and call the Government department in question back. If everything’s legitimate they’ll give you the information you need to put your mind at ease.
